OWLS HOST STUDENTS FROM KING ROBINSON SCHOOL

April 10, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Student-athletes and coaches from the Southern Connecticut State University athletic department joined with the SCSU Office of Sustainability to host students from the King Robinson School in New Haven on Monday. Students from the school received a tour of SCSU facilities and a meet-and-greet with the Owls’ student-athletes and coaches, while also taking part in recreational activities.

This event is just one example of many community outreach events that SCSU student-athletes take part in on an annual basis. SCSU student-athletes volunteered more than 2,000 hours of their time to numerous outreach efforts, both on-campus and in Greater New Haven, during the 2015-16 academic year.

OWLS HOST ANNUAL “BE THE MATCH” EVENT TO BENEFIT NATIONAL MARROW DONOR PROGRAM

April 7, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community

An annual tradition continued this week at Southern Connecticut State University as the Owls’ football program led an initiative for National Marrow Donor Program’s ‘Be The Match’ program. Supported collaboratively by members of the nursing program, the Owls conducted a station at the Michael J. Adanti Student Center. These groups helped participants through the process with assistance from representatives from the NMDP.

The program was spearheaded by Owls’ alum Andy Talley, formerly the head coach at Villanova University, more than 15 years ago. He has recruited thousands of members to the registry by encouraging his football team and their friends to join – last year alone more than 8,000 people joined through a “Get in the Game. Save A Life” donor drive. Talley’s aim is to increase the likelihood that all patients receive the life-saving transplant they need.

The Owls have had nearly 2,000 new registrants participate since beginning the initiative on campus several years ago.

Be The Match is a movement that engages a growing community of people inspired to help patients who need a marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant. The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP), a leader in the field of marrow and cord blood transplantation, created Be The Match to provide opportunities for the public to become involved in saving the lives of people with leukemia, lymphoma and other life-threatening diseases. Volunteers can join the Be The Match Registry – the world’s largest and most diverse listing of potential adult marrow donors and donated cord blood units – as well as contribute financially to Be The Match Foundation or give their time. Be The Match Foundation supports the NMDP by raising funds to grow the Be The Match Registry, help patients with transplant costs and advance medical research. Since operations began in 1987, the NMDP has provided more than 38,000 transplants to help give patients a second chance at life. For more information, visit BeTheMatch.org or call 1 (800) MARROW-2.

VOLLEYBALL DELIVERS MEALS FROM THE HEART

April 6, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community

On Monday, the LIU Post volleyball team made a difference by teaming up with Meals from the Heart to feed hungry families on Long Island.

The Pioneer student-athletes assisted in packing 200,000 meals for Island Harvest, which delivers food to local pantries, soup kitchens and other non-profit organizations that offer feeding services for those in need.

“No matter how tough you think your life is, there is always someone who has to face challenges that are tougher than yours,” said freshman Kassie Akouri-Tejedor (North Miami Beach, Fla.). “It feels great to give back and realize that you have made a significant change in someone’s life.”

“It was an amazing experience to work with my teammates to help people in need,” stated fellow freshman Lea Brady (Woodbridge, Va.). “I would like to keep going back and continue to make a difference in people’s lives.”

FIELD HOCKEY VOLUNTEERS AT THE INN AND VA MEDICAL CENTER

April 6, 2017 By Team Up 4 Community

Last week, the LIU Post field hockey team graciously took the time to volunteer at The INN in Hempstead and the VA Medical Center in Northport.

During their time at The INN, the Pioneer student-athletes helped to serve food and disperse donated goods to the less-fortunate.

“It is always a rewarding experience to give back to the community,” said senior Lauren Adamusik (Clark, N.J.). “We are so fortunate to be able to attend a great university, play the sport we love and have the support of so many people around us. Giving back at a place like The INN reminds us of just how lucky we are.”

The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) addresses the issues of hunger and homelessness on Long Island by providing food, shelter, long-term housing and supportive services for those who seek their help.

That same day, the Pioneers also went to Northport to assist military veterans with their garden work at the VA Medical Center.

“Going to the VA Hospital was a rewarding experience,” stated freshman Sarah Anthony (Wanaque, N.J.). “It was great to not only clean up the garden, but interact with the veterans, as well.”
